Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lipschitz in 1939 in Bronx, New York. With no formal training, he got a job selling ties at Brooks Brothers. While working there, Ralph took business classes at night. Ralph's first entry into the fashion world was designing neckwear for Beau Brummel in 1967. In 1968, Ralph Lauren launched his own men's wear line called Polo. Following this, Ralph Lauren introduced his women's line in 1971.

Ralph Lauren went on to launch his first perfume for women called Lauren and for men called Polo. Both fragrances were very successful and paved the way for other perfumes such as Safari and Polo Sport. Ralph Lauren's Safari was said to be inspired by his African Safaris. Safari quickly became very popular and won a Fifi award as most successful women's fragrance. Since then, Ralph Lauren has also launched fragrances such as Romance, Lauren and Lauren Style.
